Building Block or Stumbling Block?

Matthew 16:13-18 “When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, ‘Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?’ So they said, ‘Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’

He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Simon Peter answered and said, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’

Jesus answered and said to him, ‘Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.’”

Matthew 13:21-23  “From that time Jesus began to show to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and … be killed, and be raised the third day. Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, ‘Far be it from You, Lord; this shall not happen to You!’ But He turned and said to Peter, ‘Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.’”

“So many words have been written about this first passage, much of it focusing on the meaning of the word “rock,” which is the same word as “Peter.” Are they separate words with separate meanings, or are they really the same word? And if so, what does that suggest?

What do we really want?

What do we really want?   What are we willing to invest?

Psalm 37:4,  “Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.”

On Sunday, Pastor gave us a good place to start in our prayers and everyday living.  A  cross movement committed to:

Loving without bias, prejudice or condition.

Proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Reconciling the Lion’s perfect justice and the Lamb’s great mercy and sacrifice to a broken people in a broken world.

Healing people AND our communities in the power of the Holy Spirit

Withstanding the tide of anti-christ activism and intimidation.

What is the Holy Spirit speaking to you?

Father, draw us into Your perfect love and acceptance that we may demonstrate to those, in our realm of influence, who You really are and who we really are in You.

Why Haven’t You Called?

Why haven’t you called?

Growing up, my relationship with my Mother wasn’t all that either of us had expected.  So, needless to say, after I was married at a very young age, our relationship was better because I lived far away. Later though, when she moved into my town and we were both much older, she wanted to be friends.  That was never addressed  up-front but implied, and I wasn’t really listening very well.  Anyway, to make a long story shorter, my mom would get upset with me if I didn’t call her on the phone often enough.

But when I did call, she scolded me for not calling and that made me not want to call her at all.    Is it any wonder that every once in a while when I haven’t spent as much time with my Jesus as my conscience tells me I should, that I have that  feeling that when I do “call” Him, He may be upset with me?   Oh foolish girl, remember who you are calling.  The one who knows you better than you know yourself, the one who knows your Mother and all that made her the way she was.   The very one who knows how His love is healing and helping you “grow up, in all things.”    I know I’m not the only one who has issues that sometimes  get in the way of allowing our precious Heavenly Father and Elder Brother and Savior from lavishing their love, patience and wisdom on us.   It’s hard not to impose the characteristics of our earthly relationships on our Heavenly relationship.

Thank you Lord, that I can “call “ You any time of the day or night, in my times of self-inflicted bad moods, or unfounded self-pity, or unnecessary loneliness.   You will always answer and be overjoyed to hear from me.  Ready to listen, never to judge or condemn, but always desiring to heal and make me whole, wrapping me in Your loving, restoring presence.  Thank you, thank you , thank you.

One of God’s Great Pleasures

“A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion.” – Proverbs 18:2,

“Most of the discussion of this verse is on the fool, who prefers expressing himself to anything else. A related verse is Proverbs 13:16: “In everything the prudent acts with knowledge, but a fool flaunts his folly.” It’s true that someone who continually expresses himself verbally is foolish. This person expresses not only all his thoughts, but advertises his foolishness at the same time.

But hidden in the verse is a gift we can all have. It’s the pleasure that comes with understanding. It’s true that “God gives us richly all things to enjoy” (I Timothy 6:17), and one of those rich gifts is the pleasure of understanding. There is a joy to “getting” something, to having true enlightenment and wisdom about things.
