Refuge

By Roberta Stultz

REFUGE = "the condition of being safe or sheltered from pursuit, danger, or trouble."

When do we need refuge?

When we are overwhelmed.  When we have used our last resource. When you just can’t go on.  When there seems to be no answer.  When things just don’t make sense. When you are looking for a place to hide, to just get away, get free, find peace.

Refuge isn’t a place; it’s a person.  A person so real, so confident in Himself that He is all wisdom, all love, all comfort, all provision…all in all,  it’s our JESUS, our ABBA FATHER, and FRIEND HOLY SPIRIT.

This divine and precious Trinity is available to us at a moment’s notice, day or night, in the mist of our pain, confusion, anger, desperation or fear.  Our only hindrance is our self, our opinions, our lack of believing that the God of all Creation, The Jesus that died for us, and the Comforter that Jesus sent, is just waiting for us to admit and realize the Truth of His love and call out to Him.   All our natural senses scream that it can’t be true.  But He is the Truth that can and will answer any and every heart’s call.

Often our own thoughts and needs demand precedence in our minds and dominate our attention.  That’s when it comes down to our desperate cry ”I give up, God help me” and then - just give up!  Stop, quiet your mind and heart and listen for the comfort and presence of The One who loves you the most. He said "I will never leave you or forsake you."  He is always faithful.  As Christians, we need to remember that the enemy of our soul wants to destroy our peace and sanity.  We have been given instruction to plead the blood of Jesus over our mind and emotions that can free us from this torment of worry and fear. Then immediately go to the Word or a Scripture song and begin to declare the word of truth. Begin to praise and thank God for every good thing you can think of, Jesus, the cross, the blood, your health, your family etc. Continue until His peace comes, and your heart begins to respond to His love and comfort.  Later when you can spend time with Him let him show you where you opened yourself up to the fear and worry.   When we are faithful to confess and ask forgiveness, we can claim the victory over this battle.  Praise God, we can move forward and know that if and when the issue comes back to mind, you can look back and remember God’s saving grace and that this issue was settled.   The enemy cannot torment me again about this problem.

Psalm 46:1 "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."

Joel 3:16 "The Lord roars from Zion, and utters his voice from Jerusalem, and the heavens and the earth quake.  For the Lord is a refuge to his people, a stronghold to the people of Israel."

Thank you, Lord, for your faithfulness and love and your willingness to walk me through my fears and worries.  Help me Lord to keep my mind and heart full of your Word and your presence, protecting me from the darts of the enemy.  What a mighty God we serve, so majestic and yet so available when we call out to Him.  Thank you, Father, for your mercy and grace.
