The Winemaker
By Andrew Cascio
“Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.”
John 2:7 NIV
Jesus was attending a wedding, his mother Mary brought to his attention that they'd run out of wine. Jesus asks her "why do you involve me!? My time has not yet come." After her prompting, Jesus tells the servants what to do. He turns water into wine, his first public miracle. When the master of the banquet tastes the wine, not knowing what was done, he is amazed that the best wine was saved for the last. Generally people would serve the best wine when people were sober, as the night went on they would share the cheaper wine because everyone had been drinking and wouldn't notice. However, in this case, he says "you've saved the best till now!" What happened is there was something lacking, there was a need. At this time of night boxed wine would have been sufficient, no one would have noticed.
However, this was Jesus. What did he do? He went above and beyond and made a wine that was more than enough. Something with such a remarkable flavor. Could you imagine being there and tasting wine that Jesus himself made? It would be the best tasting wine you've ever had. I'm not a wine drinker myself, but I'd try a glass of that! So many people were at that party having a great time, a miracle was performed and they had no idea, they were going on and on about how great the wine was instead of paying attention to the one who made it. How often do we have a problem, something we are in need of, something we are praying for? We focus on the problem; the wine. When we should be focused on the solution; the winemaker.
Take time today and realize something in your life that you've been giving too much attention to. Perhaps it's worry, grief, or an addiction. Turn that focus on him instead. I don't know about you, but I'd like to see the winemaker and know him better. I'd like to know what else he has in store and what his plans are for me.
