Sermon: 3 Rulers part 2- The Dangers of a throne room without a throne
Text: 1 Samuel 18:6-9
Date: Sunday August 7, 2022
1 Samuel 18:6–9 (ESV)
6 As they were coming home, when David returned from striking down the Philistine, the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul, with tambourines, with songs of joy, and with musical instruments. 7 And the women sang to one another as they celebrated,
“Saul has struck down his thousands,
and David his ten thousands.”
8 And Saul was very angry, and this saying displeased him. He said, “They have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed thousands, and what more can he have but the kingdom?” 9 And Saul eyed David from that day on.
Introduction: Throne Room without a throne (insecurity):
What is the source of my security?
Ruler: Saul (1 Sam. 18:6-9):
Why does he care what other people think?
Saul’s “eye” is on David (fear of man)
Saul feared the people by esteeming their opinion too highly
Saul reveals a disordered loyalty of the heart.
The fear of man is one of the most powerful expressions of insecurity because…
…we’re looking for security and worth in other people instead of in God.
The fear of man is needing their honor and fearing their disapproval.
Fear of Man can look like:
If we don’t let God deal with our insecurities, our insecurities will deal with us.
What (WHO) is the source of my security?
Fear the Lord! (All believers for all generations)
Deuteronomy 13:4 (ESV)
4 You shall walk after the Lord your God and fear him and keep his commandments and obey his voice, and you shall serve him and hold fast to him.
A sense of dread balanced by an abundant assurance of God’s greatness and goodness.
Our soul most prospers when the fear of the Lord is most present.
Proverbs 19:23 (ESV)
23 The fear of the Lord leads to life,
and whoever has it rests satisfied;
he will not be visited by harm.
Acts 9:31 (ESV)
31 So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace and was being built up. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it multiplied.
The fear of the Lord is fully experienced at the cross of Jesus Christ.
The cross is the intersection between the overwhelming love of God and his rightful wrath.
It is the ultimate context for the fear of the Lord.
Our Challenge: Bringing the Throne of God back into the Throne room of our heart.
