Sermon: Defragment 2- Learning from Jesus

Date: February 11, 2024

Text: Matthew 11:25-30

Matthew 11:25–30 (ESV) “25 At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; 26 yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. 27 All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Let’s Connect:

Who do you most learn from?

The desire for something more is evidence of the work of the Trinity within us

The emptiness we may feel about God is actually one way He invites us to come to him.

Matthew 11:28–30 (ESV)  28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Text Explained:

“learn from me” (this invitation leads to being a learner/disciple):

John 13:15 (ESV) (after foot washing)

15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you.

Ephesians 4:20–21 (ESV) (not the way- unholiness and unloving)

20 But that is not the way you learned Christ!— 21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus,

We learn Jesus as we come to Him, inspiring us to practice His ways, shaping our lives around the life of Christ

A complete/balanced view of Jesus:

“I am gentle and lowly in heart and you will find rest for your souls:”

Learning from Jesus (gentle and lowly): Luke 7:36–50 (ESV) A Sinful Woman Forgiven

Let’s Relate:

What does a gentle and lowly heart look like in our life?

The Life of the party?  Or?

1.       Rejecting the culture of “me”

2.       It Looks like Rest

Our Challenge:

The Life of the party?  Or?  The Life AT the Party?

2 Corinthians 2:14–15 (ESV) 14 But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. 15 For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing,

Learn Jesus, individually and as a Church.
