Sermon: On the Move: Week 2- You Be You?

Text: Matt. 3:13-17

Date: Sunday Jan. 15, 2023

Matthew 3:13-17 “13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. 14 John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” 15 But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. 16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; 17 and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

Let’s Connect:

We are invited into the abundant life and mission of Jesus!

Text Explained:

Baptism Story:

1.      His baptism was needed to fulfill all righteousness.

2.      His baptism was public identification with us so that we can identify with Him.

2 Corinthians 5:21 (ESV)2For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Isaiah 53:11–12 (ESV) “Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors.

Romans 6:1–5, “What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.”

Let’s Relate:

Consider, what hinders us from living in this new identity in Christ.

 2 Corinthians 3:16–18 (ESV)

16 But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18 And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.

You do the NEW you:

1.      Behold the true Jesus; look like Jesus

“The aim, as in all theological and biblical exploration, is not to replace love with knowledge. Rather it is to keep love focused on its true object.” NT Wright

Luke 14:27, “27 Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.

Luke 6:27- 28“But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. 29 To one who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic either.”

2. Embrace the Word from God— Beloved children!

Our Together Challenge:

What does this look like for you as a follower of Christ? For us as a church?

Our priority: transformational ministry that joyfully rejects the old identity of the flesh.

Our invitation into this new identity— as beloved sons and daughters!
