Matthew 4:18–22 (ESV)
18 While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 19 And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed him. 21 And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. 22 Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
Matthew 28:16–20 (ESV)
16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Let’s Connect:
What did Jesus do to “grow” or advance the movement from Israel to the uttermost parts of the world, that continued from 30AD to 2023 AD?
Text Explained:
Jesus invited people to follow.
Matthew teaches and models what it means to follow Jesus.
• What you are doesn’t disqualify you, it’s about who you’ll become.
• Breaking ties with the past and embracing a new identity and purpose.
• Honor His authority by staying faithful to His mission.
Let’s Relate:
What keeps us from being good followers?
How we understand relationship will effect how we live in relationship: with God, each other (the Church), and with those in the world we seek to help.
Series summary: we followed Jesus:
1. Out of Egypt (deliverance)
2. Into the waters of baptism (repentance and re-identification)
3. Into the wilderness (overcoming temptations and testing through Scripture)
Challenge-Commissioning:
Today, let’s revive our commitment to follow Jesus into His abundant life and mission.
