Sermon: Thorns to Throne 6- No Hitchhiking
Text: Mark 1:21-34
Date: Sunday May 29, 2022
Mark 1:21–34 (ESV)
21 And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching. 22 And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes. 23 And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, 24 “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” 25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” 26 And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him. 27 And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” 28 And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.
29 And immediately he left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30 Now Simon’s mother-in-law lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told him about her. 31 And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them.
32 That evening at sundown they brought to him all who were sick or oppressed by demons. 33 And the whole city was gathered together at the door. 34 And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.
Come to Jesus! (Vs. 32-34)
Jesus speaks with authority because he has all authority.
He has all authority because He is King of His Kingdom
His Kingdom rules and reigns over all other kingdoms.
We share in the authority of Jesus because we join Him at His Throne
Demons were content with demonizing this person— while religious leaders seem content with his demonization— Jesus came to set the captives free.
I John 3:8, “The Son of God appeared to destroy the works of the devil.”
Hebrews 2:14: “Christ took on human nature that through death he might destroy him who has the power of death, that is, the devil.”
Colossians 2:15: “God disarmed the principalities and powers and made a public example of them, triumphing over them in him.”
Demons were afraid of Jesus (vs.23-25)
Jesus and the demons were familiar with each other—They know exactly who He is.
32 That evening at sundown they brought to him all who were sick or oppressed by demons. 33 And the whole city was gathered together at the door. 34 And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.
Awareness of any spiritual “hitchhikers”:
2 Corinthians 2:10–11 (ESV)10 Anyone whom you forgive, I also forgive. Indeed, what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, has been for your sake in the presence of Christ, 11 so that we would not be outwitted by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his designs.
Ephesians 4:22–27 (ESV)22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. 25 Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. 26 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and give no opportunity to the devil.
Psalm 94:22 (ESV) (who’s in charge…who’s in the car with us?)
22 But the Lord has become my stronghold,
and my God the rock of my refuge.
The authority of Christ silences and casts out demons.
Exercising that authority:
2 Corinthians 10:3–5 (ESV)3 For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. 5 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ.”
From coming to Jesus to going with Jesus!
2 Corinthians 2:14–17 (ESV)14 But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. 15 For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing, 16 to one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life….”.
