NOTES: Been There, Part 1
Sermon: Been There: The Big Win
Date: Sunday, March 31, 2024
Text: Luke 24:1-12
But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. 2 And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. 5 And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6 He is not here, but has risen[1] . Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, 7 that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.” 8 And they remembered his words, 9 and returning from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.10 Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles, 11 but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them. 12 But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home marveling at what had happened.

Jesus leaves a piece of evidence of his resurrection:
Text Explained:
12 But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home marveling at what had happened.
This simple piece of evidence- communicates an essential message to our faith:
Jesus has been there—
— bodily death —-
— bodily resurrection—
— proof that he won the victory over death
— in His Kingdom, no evil can destroy you.
Colossians 1:13–14 13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
A defeated worldview (fixated on the fallen world & our comfort):
Jesus didn’t escape the problems and the people; he went towards them:
Jesus chose to be “handed over into the hands of sinful men”—
Let’s Relate:
Jesus surrendered himself to sinful humanity, ultimately to make and prove his victory over sin for us.
Hebrews 4:15–16, 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
Confidence:
Drawing near:
Because He’s Been There—
We may go there—
We don’t have to stay there.
Our Challenge:
The victory of the risen Savior- provoked a response that acted on this new Kingdom reality. (Luke 24:8-10):
Giving witness to the resurrection:
Closing:
His “big win” is our “biggest win!”
Our Victory Prayer: Psalm 139:7–12, 7 Where shall I go from your Spirit?
Or where shall I flee from your presence?
8 If I ascend to heaven, you are there!
If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!
9 If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
10 even there your hand shall lead me,
and your right hand shall hold me.
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me,
and the light about me be night,”
12 even the darkness is not dark to you;
the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you.
