Unstuck Week 5: It Is Enough

Text: 1 Kings 19:1-9

Date: Sunday November 13, 2022

I Kings 19:1-9, “Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. 2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “So may the gods do to me and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by this time tomorrow.” 3 Then he was afraid, and he arose and ran for his life and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there. 4 But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he asked that he might die, saying, “It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers.” 5 And he lay down and slept under a broom tree. And behold, an angel touched him and said to him, “Arise and eat.” 6 And he looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on hot stones and a jar of water. And he ate and drank and lay down again. 7 And the angel of the Lord came again a second time and touched him and said, “Arise and eat, for the journey is too great for you.” 8 And he arose and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mount of God. 9 There he came to a cave and lodged in it. And behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

Let’s Connect:

What do you do when you’ve had enough?

Our Text Explained:

Elijah- under the broom tree (vs. 4):

God provides for physical restoration (vs. 5-7):

40 Days in the wilderness to Horeb (vs. 7-8):

Encounter with God on the mountain: What are you doing here? (Vs. 9):

Elijah’s Response (vs. 10):

God’s response and invitations- Go out and Go back (vs. 11-15):

Matthew 11:18-30, 28” Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

2 Corinthians 1:8–14 (ESV)8 For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers, of the affliction we experienced in Asia. For we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself. 9 Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead. 10 He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again.”

Philippians 3:13–15 (ESV)

13 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. 15 Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you.

Making it Relate:

What do you do when you’ve “had enough?” Be honest and attentive to God’s invitations

D. Willard: “Grace is not opposed to effort, it is opposed to earning. Earning is an attitude. Effort is an action.”

Mt of Transfiguration story:

Matt. 17:7 7 But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and have no fear.” 8 And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.

Our Challenge:

What do we do when we’ve “had enough?” See Jesus as enough!
